Strong Bones Yoga®

Strong Bones Yoga® classes combine yoga postures that build bone density with traditional weight training using light weighs, exercise bands, gliders and soft exercise balls. This type of resistance work, along with weight-bearing activity such as walking or dancing, has been proven to increase bone density and is now one of the most widely recommended methods for addressing bone loss.

Kathleen’s classes are small (max of 12) and held in a beautiful studio. Here it’s just you, your body and breath and a few other students practicing together in a peaceful setting where personal attention and individual goals are supported by an experienced, knowledgeable and compassionate teacher. Looking for a yoga class that really suits you?

Are you concerned about bone density?

Are you new to yoga and looking for the right place to explore your body and calm your mind? Or an established student tired of competing for floor space and then forcing your body into uncomfortable positions?

Kathleen Miller offers small group classes (12 max) designed to support personal growth, through individualized yoga instruction in a beautiful and intimate setting.

While many yoga classes focus on refining performance of postures, viniyoga emphasizes use of the mind and breath to find what is steady and comfortable* for each person at each moment. Practice is designed to address the larger intention of traditional yoga, i.e, to train the mind to act in a way that reduces suffering in all aspects of our lives.

Thus, by the end of class, the body is worked but balanced and relaxed, the breath has been enhanced and the mind is quiet and calm.

It is about much more than just your body. It is about all the layers of you.

*In classical Yoga, the definitive ancient text Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, includes only two words that relate to postures. They are sthira, (steady,) and sukha (comfortable.)

WHY PRACTICE YOGA?

  • Could aspects of your life be more rewarding?
  • Are you stressed?
  • Does your body have areas that bother you?
  • Are you physically (and maybe mentally) stiffer than you’d like to be?
  • Does your mind seem a little out of control?
  • Are you concerned with the challenge of aging?
  • Do you have a disease or condition that limits your enjoyment and participation in life?

Yoga was designed to train our minds to function in a way that prevents suffering in all aspects of life. For several thousand years it has provided clinical techniques that address the myriad problems that arise in human bodies and life in general.

Traditional yoga starts with the individual, right where each person is in his/her body, stage of life, condition, etc. and goes from there. It involves practices for all layers of ourselves (physical structure, our bodily physiology, our learning minds, our personalities, our deepest desires and our spiritual lives.)

In order to do some of the mental practices we need a body that is strong and healthy…that’s where asana, (postures) and breathing techniques (pranayama) come in. But the true benefit and intention of yoga goes far beyond the body alone. Whereas the majority of yoga classes offer only asana, viniyoga’s inclusion of body, breath and mind in the practice results in a profound and deeply satisfiying effect.

WHO CAN DO YOGA?

If you can breathe, you can do yoga.

Everyone, regardless of age, ability or experience can benefit from Yoga. Depending on the student and the goal it might be used to reduce stress, increase ease of movement, improve posture, increase strength, relieve pain or help in sleep difficulties, develop improved mental focus and general peace of mind.

Both group classes and individual instruction are centered around each student’s unique body, situation and goal.

This tradition of yoga is especially therapeutic for people with stress and high blood pressure, as well as those with health concerns like arthritis, asthma, autoimmune disorders, chronic fatigue, heart disease, sports or repetitive strain injuries and pain.
